Cortlandt man charged in Philipstown crash that sent him, 3 others to hospital

By Terence Corcoran

PHILIPSTOWN - A 37-year-old Cortlandt man was under the influence of drugs when he caused a two-car crash Thursday on Route 9 that sent three people in the other car to the hospital with internal injuries, state police said today.

James E. Timmons Jr. of Buttonwood Avenue is charged with first-degree vehicular assault, a felony, and driving while ability impaired by drugs, a misdemeanor, in the 3:20 p.m. crash Thursday one-half mile north of Route 403, police said.

Investigators Timothy W. Miller and Sean J. Morgan of the state police determined that Timmons was heading north on Route 9 in a 2006 Chevrolet van when the vehicle crossed into the southbound lane and struck a 2004 Jeep Liberty.

The driver and one of two passengers in the Jeep were taken to local hospitals with what police described as serious internal injuries that resulted in both of them being listed in critical condition. The second passenger was in stable condition at the Hudson Valley Hospital Center. Their names were not immediately available.

Timmons, meanwhile, was treated at Hudson Valley for minor injuries and sent to the Putnam County jail in lieu of $10,000 cash bail or $20,000 bond. Police did not indicate what drug he allegedly took.

The crash closed the road temporarily.
