Amanda's Law (Carbon Monoxide Alarms) |
| February 2, 2010 |
| |
A new law named Amanda’s Law will go into effect on February 22, 2010.
It is named after Amanda Hansen who died in 2009 from CO poisoning from a defective boiler at a friend’s home.
This law will require carbon monoxide (CO) alarms to be installed in all dwellings that have any fuel burning appliance, system or attached garage.
Following is a quick summary of the law:
- All dwellings constructed on or after January 1, 2008 must have a CO alarm installed on each floor that has a sleeping area or where a carbon monoxide source is located (garage, furnace).
- All dwellings constructed before January 1, 2008 must have a CO alarm installed on the lowest story having a sleeping area.
- When work is performed on a dwelling that includes the addition or installation of a CO source, an alarm shall be installed within each dwelling unit or sleeping unit on the lowest story having a sleeping area.
- CO alarms should not be installed near openings to garages, bathrooms or furnace rooms or in any area specified as “prohibited” in the manufacturer’s instructions.
For further details, you should contact the Bob Emerick at the Code Enforcement Office of the Town of Philipstown at 845-265-5202 or reference the bill here.
