Training - Wildfire Fire Supression |
| June 4, 2009 |
| |
|
Training was conducted at the Garrison Volunteer Fire Department's Station 2 on wildland firefighting.
Providing the training was a forest ranger from the New York State Department of Enviornmental Conservation.
The class consisted of a classroom lecture on Thursday night followed by a practical class session on Sunday, June 7.
Topics covered in the classroom were fire behavior, effects of fire based on topography, fuels that are encountered during a wildfire, size up, fire supression and most important, safety.
The practical session consisted of the use of hand tools and how to create a fire line.
Training such as this is very important due to the large brush fires that can occur in our area, as we experienced in March of this year.
Members of the North Highlands Engine Company participated along side us.
