On May 30, 2009, the Garrison Volunteer Fire Company assisted with the Garrison Art Center’s "Float Your Boat," celebration.
The event took place to remember the quadricentennial of Henry Hudson's sail up the Hudson with this free community event, in the backyard of the Art Center on Garrison's Landing.
Families and kids were invited to create floating sculptures (think Mr. Potato Head on water) using all kinds of found, recycled, and other shipwrecked materials.
A talented crew of builders, woodworkers, cabinet makers, artists, and captains volunteered to collaborate with participants in the creative process.
The Garrison Fire Department provided a 500 gallon pool and a water pump which were used for testing buoyancy and stability.
At 3:00 pm the flotilla of finished "crafts" were successfully launched using the Hudson as a canvas.
From Meg Staley, Vice President, Garrison Art Center
David Small, thanks so much for contributing your time and pools and please thank the Garrison Fire Department for us.
The pools allowed the participants to see and dream about possibilities at the start and got the tiny craft floating at the end.
